For Mykela, the decision to return to school felt out of reach. As a mother of two—Cadele (7 years old) and Tremyah (17 years old)—and already holding a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, the weight of student loans made further education seem impossible. But when a recruiter from Chicago Commons’ Pathways for Parents program visited her Child Development Associate class, everything changed.
When balancing work and CDA certification became overwhelming, Mykela considered stepping away—but instead, she found a new option with Pathways for Parents. With encouragement from program staff, she realized she could still pursue her goal to complete another degree.
Through Pathways for Parents, Mykela was connected with a scholarship advisor, and the process of enrolling in school became smooth and stress-free. Now, she’s preparing to graduate in May and is excited to continue her journey in early childhood education.
Reflecting on her experience, Mykela shares, “I appreciate Chicago Commons for everything they have done to support me and my children. Even as a former Pathways parent, I know I can always count on them.”
